From
24 states, including
Alaska and Hawaii, and
from
several
provinces of Canada they
came, the Papillon
fanciers
and their bright. dancing
"Butterfly
Spaniels," to
participate
the celebration of the
Golden Anniversary of the
founding
of the Papillon Club of
America, Inc.
On
Friday, May 10. an
Obedience Seminar was held
at the
Holiday
Inn in Ontario, CA. The
National Specialty
itself
was
held on Saturday, May 11,
on the grounds of the
California
State Polytechnic University
( Pomona, CA )
and
drew a record entry of 218
Papillons. The
Specialty
was
dedicated to the late
Clarice Babbidge ( Jaclair
Papillons
) and many of the winners
at this specialty were
descendants
of some of the Jaclair
dogs. The
catalog
was,
in itself, a work of art,
complied by Gloria
Coleman,
it
included some fine artwork
submitted by PCA members.
The
day's judging started off
with the "Sweepstakes".
Mrs.
Virginia
Newton drew an entry of 60
youngsters ranging in
the
age from 6 to 15
months. Best in Sweepstakes
was
Larkspur
Talisman, a beautifully
coated black and white
eight
month old male, owned bred
and handled by Diane
Noe.
BOS in Sweeps was the 14
month old bitch Loteki
Total
Elegance, bred by Lou Ann
King and co-owned by
her
breeder and Tracy
Halverson.
Judging
the regular classes and
Best of Breed was Mrs.
Ann
Stevenson. Mrs.
Stevenson selected as her
Best of
Breed
winner the much admired
Ch. Cadaga's Chorinne
(
Ch. Cadaga's U-Bet x
Cadaga's Tres Jolie ),
owned and
bred
by Mrs. catharine D.
Gauss, one of the founding
members
of the PCA. Chorinne
was handled, as always,
by
John Qulton and it was very
easy everyone to see that
John
Qulton and Chorinne were a
marvelous
"team".
This
beautiful
little bitch is a
brilliant red and
sparkling white ;
and
such showmanship , she
walzed around the ring
with
her
head held high, as if she
owned it. The BOS
winner
was
Ch. Bannahydes UFO of
Beechwood ( Ch. Jaclair's
Howdy
Doody, CD x Ch.
Florentine's Camille, CD
) UFO
was
shown by his owner,
Alfreda Myle, in the
Veteran
class.
At almost nine years of
age, UFO still looked
superb,
confirming that the Papillon
truly hold its looks
well
into advanced years.
WD/BW
came from the 6-9 Month
Puppy class, Kvar Classic
Josandre' ( Ch. Kvar Red
Wings, C.D.X. x
Luxxor
Touch of Mystique ), owned
and bred by Pearl George
and Mary Jo Loye.
"Sean" was
handled by Tammy
(
Fields ) Harris. The
WB, Luxxor Touch of
Mystery ( Ch.
Glorycole
Bachelor Button x Kvar
Touch of Class ) , owned
Annette and
Carolyn
Smith, came from the Open
Bitch
class
and was handled by Tracy
Halverson. It was very |
|
pleasing
to see such good entries
in the Bred By classes as
well as the Veterans and
other non-regular classes. Getting
a brace in Papillons is extremely
difficult, since the dogs
come in such a wide variety
of colors and markings, and
the breed standard allows
for eight to eleven inches
in height
with over eleven and under
twelve inches being a fault.
However, despite the difficulty,
there were four well matched
braces entered, with Mary
Lou Sandvik's brace placing
first. Also
entered was
beautifully matched Phalene
( drop ear ) brace,
belonging to Furnam and
Mary Cunningham
who have been working hard
at reviving the original
drop eared Papillon. This
was only the second time
in history of the Papillon Club
of America
that there gad been an independent specialty
and the first to have
offered Junior Showmanship and
Obedience classes.
Mrs. Edith Iszant, who
passed on the
Junior Showmanship classes
gave Best Junior honors to
Katie Wicks, who came from
Hawaii to attend this, her first
show on the
"mainland". The
trophies were really
exceptional, thanks to the generosity
of PCA members.
Included among the awards were
especially designed
handcrafted Cece Canaga Papillon
models, each one wearing a
painted-on goldtone chain
with a tiny butterfly on
its center, inset with a
small German
crystal ( there were many
poses, the American Bred
model being very patriotic
with an American flag
). The
Papillon Club of America
is most fortunate in having a
number of very talented
members, many donated
their works. The
supported entry at the Rio
Hondo Kennel Club Show saw
the beautiful Candaga's
Chorinne go to Best of
Bred, and,
to climax a wonderful
weekend, on to a truly
well deserved
BEST IN SHOW. For
the many of us who stayed through
BIS judging, after all the
photographs and presentations,
Chorinne gave us a display
of happy exuberance
as she bounced up and
down, coat and fringes flying
and with the late rays of
setting sun catching
her coat
which sparkled like
glittering copper and
silver snow, it
was a sight at those of us
who saw it never will
forget.
