Gowdy
became a champion in
California while still a
puppy and owned by his
breeder,
Virginia
Newton.
He arrived at
Starheir ( Weicks were already
well known for their
Irish Setters ) in
January, 1968. He was
a
very sweet, loving
little dog who
loved to ride on Lorraine’s
lap, loved to eat and
was happiest as a little
house pet.
At his first show in
Michigan he and his
owner placed in the
group.
(A feat back in
those days that was
nearly impossible!).
A
few months later Tommy
Glassford asked to show
him and won a Group
First under highly
respected toy judge, Ed
Pickhardt.
Since his first puppies
started winning at six
months, he was
campaigned sparingly
since he was needed at
home as a pet
and
a stud dog.
So mostly
Weick’s took him to
the shows, which he
really preferred (
rather than living with
a handler ).
Gowdy loved music and
when their youngest son
Steve practiced his
flutophone, Gowdy would
hold his head high and
warble
like a canary !
Several of his
get also had this
‘talent’.
He also liked to
lie upside down in
Lorraine’s arms and
would sleep
happily when sung a
lullaby.
Gowdy was the first Pap
to be ranked in the top
ten toys ( 1970 ) and
was top producer in 1969
through 1976 and again
in 1978.
He had 67
champion offspring out
of 22 different dams.
He was the sire
of the Canadian Best in
Show winner, Am/Can Ch.
Jaclair’s Kawartha
Jason and the American
Best in Show bitch,
Am/Can Ch. Starheir’s
Crown Jewel.
