During
these years, the
membership has seen many
changes in both the
Papillon Club and the
Breed.
In
1999, a new Board of
Trustees was elected.
Susi Gleffe took over
the reins of the
presidency from
Sylvia
Jung. Susi wasted
no time in setting up
her committees, getting
acquainted with her
Board, presiding over
meetings,
handling complaints
(these seem to be more
prevalent than
compliments) and
requesting the
membership
to submit bids for
future National
Specialties.
In
April 1999, the PCA
website was announced to
educate the general
public about our breed,
the Club, Papillon
achievements
and responsible dog
breeding and ownership.
The website is organized
by: PCA
Information,
Breed
Information, Assistance
on Finding a Papillon,
Membership Information,
Publications available,
PCA
Specialty
Show news and finally,
Awards and Achievements.
Our Webmaster is Russ
Burdick and he has done
an
outstanding job in
setting the website up
and maintaining it.
Both
the Patriot Papillon
Club and Papillon Club
of Hawaii received
Specialty status from
AKC. The
Papillon Club
of
Hawaii held its first
Specialty Show and
Obedience Trial on May 11th, 1996.
On November 15, 1996, the
Patriot
Papillon
Club held their First
Annual Specialty Show.
The Papillon Club of
America held its first NE
Regional
Specialty
in New York in February
1997.
In
March 1996, PCA was
saddened to hear of the
death of Betty Kenworthy
(Kenrennie). Although a
Canadian,
Mrs.
Kenworthy’s Papillons
won top honors on both
sides of the border.
She was very much loved
and highly
respected
by all who knew her.
Charm Preston passed
away in August of the
same year. Charm
bred Papillons
under
the prefix ‘Wunsom’.
In 1998, William Crane (Glenmary),
husband of Freida,
passed away. That
same
year
we lost Herman Bender (Tracelynn),
father of Janice
Dougherty, and an
Honorary Life Member of
PCA.
On
April 12, 1999 Rica Owen
Moore (ROM) passed away.
Rica was a wonderfully
talented lady who was
devoted
to
her Paps.
The membership was
deeply saddened to hear
of the death of Harry
Palmer’s lovely wife
Jeannie.
Harry
has been responsible for
the printing and mailing
of PapTalk.
Jesse Johnson of
‘Jeja’ Papillons was
perhaps
the oldest of these
members at the time of
her death. Jesse
was a positively
delightful southern lady
who
always had a smile and
encouraging words for
all she met.
The
National Specialties
traversed the country
and were well attended
by breed, obedience,
agility and rescue
aficionados.
Andover, Massachusetts
was the scene for the
1996 National. The
following year the
sounds of
the
roulette wheels could be
heard as Reno, Nevada
was taken over by
‘butterflies’. San
Diego hosted the
National
in
1998, and the next year
the Club booked a
beautiful lodge in
Delevan, Wisconsin. The
forty-seventh National
Specialty
Show was held in
Knoxville, Tennessee.
With this vast
geographical span,
nearly all American
members
were able to attend at
least one National
Specialty. Each
year, we have the
opportunity to meet and
exchange
information with many of
our foreign members and
friends who come from
every corner of the
world
to
attend our National.
During
these five years,
membership applicants
averaged ten per month.
The membership ranks
swelled to over
seven
hundred at its peak.
The Papillon Club of
America truly was global
with members in Canada,
England,
Denmark,
Sweden, Australia,
Finland, Holland, New
Zealand and Japan.
The
editorship of PapTalk
has changed hands three
times during the last
five years ( seven in
the last ten ).
Information
on coming specialties
can be found in almost
every issue. We
have had quarterly
issues, monthly
issues
and covers that are
glossy in a continuing
effort to improve the
newsletter. New
titleholders are
published
and
the AKC stud dog pages
are always of interest
to many of the members.
