My
first sight of a
Papillon was in the AKC
Gazette – and I had to
have one !
I wrote to Yvonne
Auer-Veogelin in
Switzerland
and she made available
to me the choice of a
litter she had purchased
from A. Gombeer, a
Belgian breeder.
This puppy was
shipped to her New York
agent for a rest-over
and then shipped to me
in California. This was beautiful "Corina" whose first
daughter was purchased
by Irvine Cromwell and
made her championship in
3 5pt. Shows and placed
in group ( Ch. Danaidae
Camee de Royal ) –
certainly a record then.
The fifth import
Eva de Bonneels bred to
my Ch. Kerberos
Feuilleton then
started my Ch. Male
line:
Ch. Danaidae
Rustique, Ch. Danaidae
Ricochet, Ch. Danaidae
Gem
de Royal; Ch.
Danaidae
Zipper d’Royal on to
Ch. Danaidae d’Royal.
Zipper won WD at
the 19
PCA National and
in 1965 at 11th PCA
National
Specialty – Ch.
Danaidae Gille d’Royal
was Best of Breed after
he had been purchased
and shown by Catherine
Gauss
( Cadaga ).
I’ve been a National
club member since 1953,
and one of the beginning
members in our original
PCNC ( Papillon Club of
Northern CA )
I still have four
Papillons – and breed
once a year -
one of the four
is a little pistol, six
month old "Papyon
PT Cruiser"
a rich red sable.
I changed my
prefix from "Danaidae"
to "Papyon"
several years ago.
I’ve been a show
chairman ( Sacramento )
on a few boards in local
clubs, etc.
Recently,
however, since the
passing of
my husband a year ago
(2001) I’ve been too
busy keeping up my 2 and
¾ acres and my hobbies
of paining ( oils and
pastels )
and egguery ( decorating
and carving eggs shells
from Rhea, Emu, Ostrich
and geese ) and raising
Bengal cats ( 3 & 4
generations down from
original cross of a
domestic x wild Asian
Leopard cats ).
Years ago, I exported
Danaidae Beausacq de
Royal to Norma Staff as
an exchange of her Eng.
Lines for my Belgian
lines.
I’ve
enjoyed by mail a great
friendship.
Subsequently, the
same with Australian
breeder Thelma Morrell
who purchased an
offspring of my export,
from Norma!
I heard that Norma and
her daughter were
attending the 1998 PCA
National Specialty in
San Diego, so I flew
down to
spend
the day with my dear
friend – this was a
great treat after so
many years of
corresponding.
I was able to get 99%
perfect blazes and
dainty heads and muzzles
and luxuriant long silky
coats even back in the
50’s
from
my Belgian lines.
In general ears have
become larger – and
only hope we haven’t
lost the calm, trusting
nature – I used to
scoop 2 – 4 paps
up
into my arms, completely
relaxed.
Frankly it takes
two hands and arms to
keep little "PT"
safe – he’s a live
wire !
