Clarice Babbidge

It has been thirty years since the passing of Clarice Babbidge, founder of the

internationally famous Jaclair kennel, yet the mark she left on the Papillon World

  is still clearly visible.

During her life, Clarice was a woman full of love, caring and gentleness.  She is

remembered best for her friendliness and her willingness to share herself and her

knowledge.  She had a profound love of animals and both people and animals

responded to her with warmth and trust.  She had a way of always making you

  feel special.

Clarice’s mother, Mary Sully, helped to pioneer the new breed of "butterfly dogs"

in England in the 1930s.    Clarice never forgot those small dogs and in the late

1950s in Canada she returned to the breed and Jaclair Papillons was born.  With

Clarice’s love and guidance Jaclair developed an international reputation.

Clarice was a keen competitor. Under her, Jaclair dogs set many records in both Canada and the US. Highlights of her

accomplishments in the breed include breeder of the Top Pap, Top Toy and Number 2 All Breeds in 1978 in Canada ( after

Clarice passed away, handled by Elaine Whitney ), breeder of Best of Breed at the PCA Specialty in 1976 and 1977 and

breeder of the Number 1 Pap in the U.S. in1976.  She bred six Canadian Best In Show Papillons, three of which were also

American Best In Show winners. BIS BISS AM CDN BDA Ch Jaclair’s Ziggi held an all time record for top winning Papillon

in North America for many years.

Competition, however, was not the most important thing to her. Her first love was by far her dogs and the wonderful friends

that she made through the dogs. She met people all over Canada, the US and the UK.  She would look forward to particular

shows each year because of the people she would meet there. She enjoyed being with them and sharing her enthusiasm

with both new and established breeders.

Although she was Canadian, Clarice was an active participant in the dog world on both sides of the Canadian/American border.

She contributed in the establishment of  "The Papillon Club of Canada" ( forerunner of the present club - Papillon Canada )

serving in several capacities including President.  She also had strong ties to the Papillon Club of America, involving activities

such as sitting on a committee responsible for revising the American Standard with her good friend Dick Richards in the 1970s.

No one can deny that Clarice Babbidge was a "Breeder of Influence"; ample proof is in the legacy she left in her dogs.

Jaclair Papillons are seen buried behind the pedigrees of most of the top winning Papillons in North America even today.

Many well-known American and Canadian kennels were founded on a Jaclair dog.

Her dogs were not something she did.  They were what she was.
