Pearl A George

Pearl Alma George was a Second World War baby, born in Romford, England and
until the day she left us she was known for her beautiful accent and her pride in the
country of her birth. Pearl was truly a "lady" – a gentle soul who would sit with a
novice and give advice and guidance or reminisce with the "established" breeders
about the early days in the breed. Pearl had a keen wit - and those of us who knew
her well will forever remember her sense of humor.

Besides the Papillons, the love of Pearl’s life was her husband of nearly forty years
  – "her Monte". An example of Pearl’s quick wit was paramount the day Monte
proposed to her by saying, "Well, we can either go bowling or, we can get married."
Pearl’s immediate response was typical when she replied, "Well, I’m not very good
at bowling !" Within twenty-four hours she was to become what the Papillon
community would know her as – Mrs. Monte ( Pearl ) George.

Monte was a pilot for United ( Pearl met him while she was a stewardess for the

same airline ) and when it came time for a kennel name Monte suggested Kavar

as it was an intricate part of an airplane and not likely to be duplicated.

Unfortunately, the AKC did not see it that way and denied her registration – so they settled on KVAR. By this time one of her

most famous Papillons had already placed his mark in history – the Best in Show winning Ch. Kavar Baby Bronco. His sire

was Ch. Jaclair’s Damian, whose dam was the lovely English bred Ch. Inverdon Michaela. Bronco’s dam was the beautiful

import of Pearl’s Ch. Quinetta Athena – bred by Joan Brown. Both of these two superb imports went back to Ch. Grenmichel’s

Bronco whom Pearl linebred on in her early breeding program. It has been said that Pearl’s KVAR line changed the "look" of

the breed in America and I am inclined to agree. Carrie, Ch. Quinetta Athena, had a tremendous influence on the breed. Her

large ears with dripping curtain fringe were a welcome sight and her bright orange tri color carries on to this day.

Pearl’s lovely KVAR dogs are known worldwide. She has bred or co-bred Papillons who have achieved Best in Shows in the

States, Canada, and Bermuda. KVAR dogs have won the top awards at PCA National and Regional Specialties, Westminster

and the World Show. Ch. Kavar The Huntsman was the first BIS Papillon west of the Mississippi and to date the only Papillon

to win both Best in Sweeps and Best of Breed at the same National Specialty. Pearl’s accomplishments in the breed are

  legendary.

The Phalene had always held a fascination for Pearl and she researched them for years. Recently, she had co-bred three

Phalene champions all whom will carry on in breeding programs across the country. In a conversation with Salwa Alfadl she

mentioned a lovely tri male in Canada bred by Kim McKay and Murray Berg ( & James Barnes ). Salwa followed up and located

"Cobb" and Kim – and the rest is Phalene history ! Pearl had a ringside seat this year at the PCA National as "Cobb"

( CH. Arkeno’s Ears To You ) won the breed. In her lifetime, Pearl witnessed, firsthand, the Phalene gaining the recognition

they so richly deserve. She knew her ‘delightful drop ears’ would now be fully appreciated by judges and exhibitors alike.

One of Pearl’s greatest desires was to see the breed she so loved free of PRA. Though she did not live long enough to see

this accomplished her friends and admirers can continue the research in her name. At this time in our "Quest for the PRA test",

the greatest financial need is for the support of our Papillons at MSU. Memorial donations can be made to MSU Papillon

Project in memory of Pearl George. Any donations made to the MSU Papillon Project are tax deductible. Please send the

donations to our PCA Genetics Chair Elaine Zech, 251 Chinkapin Court, Roseburg, OR 97470. An acknowledgment will be

posted on the PCA- Genetics Web page as a memorial to Pearl.

The breed has lost a great fancier - and the world a great lady. Her friends, though they will miss her, are grateful for the

wonderful memories. Pearl’s influence and knowledge as well as the KVAR bloodlines will without doubt impact the breed for

  generations to come ...

We shall miss you dear friend ...
