Genetic Disorder Research Fundraising |
|
The Papillon Club of America was one of the first organizations to join the Canine Health Foundation initiated by the American Kennel Club. Raising funds to sponsor research and educate Papillon lovers is an ongoing function of the PCA Genetic Research Committee
All money raised is placed in the DONOR FUND at the CHF, and is then channeled into various research projects. Currently the PCA is funding a two year research Grant # 2031 ,"Investigation of Candidate Loci for Progressive Retinal Atrophy in the Old English Sheepdog and the Papillon Breeds." This study has been joined recently by the Collie Club and the Tibetan Terrier clubs.
Our contribution for the first year of this study was $11,300. Obviously continuous funds must be generated by the PCA to continue to support this and hopefully, other areas of research.
The PCA would like to invest in additional research. Currently there are 28 Canine Health Research projects being supported by CHF. We would like to be able to pursue other venues of health issues. Examples might be: epilepsy, autoimmune diseases, and liver disease to mention a few.
Genetic research is a long term project. Results are not expected to occur overnight, however with persistence and continued funding it is the hope that the Papillon Club of America can advance the health status of our breed via research endeavors.
It is important to remember that what money is collected for research and deposited with CHF, will be MATCHED by the CHF. There by every dollar equals two dollars when designated to a research project. In 2003 there are numerous projects underway to generate research money. We will be having auctions on Ebay, sponsoring raffles, auctions and there is always the plea to have people remember the Papillon research in their wills and memorials.
