HEALTH SURVEY 2005-2010

OFA - Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

This survey will run from March 1 through December 31, 2010

A STUDY OF HEALTH IN THE PAPILLON
In the past 10 years, Papillons have gone from #46 to #37 in American Kennel Club's

ranking of breeds according to registration statistics – a substantial increase in a breed

with a small number of puppies per litter. While it’s great that more and more people

recognize the outstanding characteristics of the Papillon as a companion and

competitor, this increased popularity may also expand the potential for health issues

in our breed. Just this past year, two serious neurological issues have emerged in

U.S.A. Papillons that were previously not on our radar.

FACTS ABOUT PROGRESSIVE RETINAL ATROPHY ( PRA ) By Leona Domino

PRA is a general term for a number of eye diseases.

These diseases have included certain features. One is that the diseases begin at a very specific time in each breed. The diseases progress at a very predictable rate. The dogs

that are affected with the disease become blind at an age very specific to the breed.

Some become blind early, some late. The end result is blindness. Click to read more ...

OFA QUARTERLY REPORT : 09.07.2009

Click here to open the latest OFA report ( html - will open in a new window )

( also available in : pdf )

You will find the most recent OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of America) reports of testing

done on Papillons.  This includes Cardiac, Patella, Heart, and in some instances Hip.
These test results are kept by OFA indefinitely and are reports for the current year.
They are listed by their test numbers not the name of the dog or owner.

Keep in mind that once a dog/bitch receives an OFA number for Patella , Heart and a CERF

number for the eyes, the dog will automatically receive a CHIC number which is recorded on

the dogs permanent AKC registration. There is no charge for subsequent testing's so later

tests will be also part of the permanent record. OFA keeps the CERF numbers in their

records as part of their registry but they do not charge extra for this recording.

Canine Health Foundation

Call for Samples from dogs that die from

Degenerative Mitral Valve disease ( Thursday, May 08, 2008 )

Chronic degenerative valve disease is the most common heart disease that affects dogs.

To date, the cause of this disease has remained elusive. It is known that the collagen that

provides much of the support in the valve is damaged in diseased valves. One popular theory

is the existence of an imbalance between the proteins that break down collagen and those

that prevent collagen breakdown. The proposed study will determine the difference in the

balance between these proteins in normal cultured valve cells and valve cells cultured from

diseased leaflets. Differences that exist between normal and diseased valve cells will help

target future research projects and aid in determining the cause of this prevalent disease

process.

We are requesting mitral valve tissue from dogs that have died or have been euthanized

that have significant degenerative mitral valve disease. This valve tissue will be used to

culture cells from the tissue in order for us to study this disease from a cell culture

perspective. For inclusion in the study, dogs need to have a diagnosis of degenerative mitral

valve disease from their veterinarian ( if echocardiography findings are available, those

should be provided as well) and the owner needs to be willing to let their referring

veterinarian remove the mitral valve from the dog after it dies or is euthanized.

The tissue should be removed within 2 hours of death or euthanasia.

At this point we are not studying a specific breed so any dog diagnosed with mitral valve

disease is qualified to enter the study.

We are requesting the anterior mitral valve leaflet (the larger leaflet most associated with

the septum and aorta) but if there is any confusion the entire mitral valve can be shipped

and we can collect the anterior mitral valve leaflet once it arrives here. The sample should

be shipped in phosphate buffered saline. If needed, we can ship tubes of phosphate buffered

saline for sample collection. The sample should be shipped on ice overnight to the address

below. Please contact Dr. Heaney if you need additional information.
