INFORMATION FOR SENDING BLOOD FOR PRA TESTING

1.

A proper eye exam must be done to ascertain the true diagnosis of the

AFFECTED dog. (this is a dog that has been diagnosed with progressive

retinal atrophy PRA)

2.

If your dog has been diagnosed with progressive retinal atrophy, or is

related to an affected dog, please help us to gather samples.

Our aim is to identify the gene mutation that causes PRA in the

Papillons. This will allow us to develop a genetic test to eventually

eradicate PRA. We have considerable experience in looking for genetic

defects in dogs.  Dr. Petersen-Jones was responsible for the

identification of the genetic defect for PRA in Cardigan Welsh Corgis and

development of a DNA-based test for the mutation. We need your help to

gather these samples from affected dogs and their immediate relatives.

We can extract DNA from blood samples or cheek swabs. Along with the sample,

we request a copy of the pedigree and a copy of any eye exam results.

We can send you the blood collection kit or cheek swab kit, which includes a blood

tube or cheek swab, instructions for collection, and a submission form.
