Hi, I am Radar's foster mom and am going to speak for him. If I allowed him to speak for himself, he would tell you that he is a big dog and can do anything he wants to do. That is not quite true. Radar is a tiny, fairly fragile, but very entertaining, overall happy little boy. He was surrendered to PCAR by his owner because of owner’s medical issues and because of Radar's medical and behavior issues.
He is truly a delicate Pap! He sustained a lower back injury at some point in his life and has some residual numbness in his back legs because of that. He is on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and will probably need to take that for the rest of his life. (The current medication runs about $20.00 a month). He has probably been in pain for quite some time, and hurts when picked up and anticipates pain when groomed or when having his belly band put on. He snarls and will snap at these times. He has responded well to the use of a quality muzzle used sparingly and will try to calm himself when he is shown the muzzle. He has also responded well to loving, careful handling and grooming and the use of treats in learning "come." He will not ever be able to perform general obedience tasks like "sit" and "down" because it takes him a very long time to identify a comfortable way to do these things. He can not jump up on furniture and can not climb steps. He must be in a home where there are no steps to outside or where his forever mom/dad is willing to always, always pick him up.
This beautiful boy has chronic ear infections and will have to be on regular medicine for this problem. Lack of consistent treatment has diminished his hearing and made it easy to startle him if he doesn't see you coming. Don't startle him; he will snarl and snap.
He is not housetrained and this may be because he does not feel the time-to-potty signals that a "normal" dog would feel. He does potty when taken outside but will not let you know that it is time to go outside.
He is crate trained and will go into his crate or get on his doggie bed when he is sleepy. Because of his back injury, he needs to sleep in one of these spots, not in bed with his humans. He loves his leash and loves walks, he just tires easily.
Radar would love to have another tiny, gentle companion to play with, and has truly enjoyed chasing the cats in his foster home (he wants them to play; they are less enthusiastic). However, he can not be placed with a larger pet because of his back. If he is playing and loses his footing, he falls to his side and can not get back on his feet. Humans must always supervise playtime. Obviously, he will not be placed in a home with children or grandchildren under 14. As I said before, he thinks he is a big dog and likes to play tug…just be gentle and limit his play time so he doesn't tire too much.
Please don't think that his issues make him unadoptable. Radar is an endearing dog and is happy most of the time, takes joy in running in circles and indulges this joy frequently, loves attention on his terms, and will be a great companion in a forever home that understands his limitations. He is vocal in the mornings and enjoys his food when he can stop running circles long enough to eat!
